Solid beech timber board: what is it?
Beech is a hardwood species with little to no knots. Steamed beech wood has a whitish to pinkish colour that can discolour when exposed to daylight. When you sand the sheet, the original wood colour will return, and this is strongly recommended before finishing the panel with stain, lacquer or oil. Beech has little grain, and the grain pattern that is visible is generally even and calm. Beech has a straight, sometimes wavy thread and a fine grain. This type of wood also has an even structure with little grain pattern. The beech wood in our assortment is steamed, which gives the wood a soft pink and relatively even colour. Perfect when you are looking for a wood type with a subtle appearance. A beech panel is also called a beech furniture board or timber board.
Wood can be subdivided into the categories of hardwood and soft wood. Hardwood comes from deciduous trees and softwood from coniferous trees. Beech is a light-coloured deciduous wood type. Deciduous wood, or hardwood, is characterized as a hard and strong sheet material.
Beech wood has an antibacterial effect and is odourless. It is important to always properly treat the beech right away. Sand the sheet and then finish it with varnish, stain or oil. Beech is not suitable for outdoor applications, please take this into account. In addition, just like any other solid wood species, beech warps with temperature differences and when used in humid areas. For this reason, always take warping into account with solid boards.
Beech boards are supplied in different visual qualities. A/B describes the appearance of the sheet and therefore has nothing to do with the structural strength of the material. The term A/B means that the top side of the sheet has visual quality A and the underside has visual quality B. This means that the top is almost completely free of knots. Occasionally, there may be a small knot here and there, but it will be no larger than 4 millimetres. The underside has visual grading B and can therefore have a somewhat coarser appearance. Here, knots of up to 7 millimetres are allowed. The heartwood and sapwood of the beech differ little.
Lumber Quality Indication | |
---|---|
A | Uniform colour. No knots and no heartwood allowed. |
B | Small colour nuances permitted. Tassels and heartwood may be present. |
C | Large colour nuances permissible. Tassels and heartwood are present. |

To create a solid wood beech board, small planks are sawn from the wood (slats), which are then glued together and finger jointed. Finger jointing involves milling a figure at the ends of the slats so that the slats can be firmly glued together. To be able to make a sheet of a larger size, several slats are combined into one large sheet. This results in a very solid and strong sheet. The result is a solid wooden sheet that is visibly composed of several small slats. These slats run in the longitudinal direction of the sheet. Keep in mind that no slat has the same appearance. The wood structure and colour of each slat is unique and can therefore also deviate from the image. Our solid sheets are interior bonded, which means that the material can only be used indoors.
The direction of the wood grain
Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!
Quality grading with timber board
Timber board comes in different qualities. This does not mean that the sheet is more or less strong, it indicates the quality of the appearance of the sheet. The quality can be found in the product properties. More information about the visual grading below.
Available thicknesses of solid beech timber board
Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 19 mm, 27 mm and 40 mm.
Machining solid beech timber board
Machining beech wood is easy. It is a hard wood type but easy to machine. This is partly due to the limited splintering of this wood type. Because it is a light, hard wood species, the use of sharp tools is highly recommended. With tools that are dull or not sharp enough, burns can occur. The use of stainless-steel screws instead of iron screws is also strongly recommended preventing discolouration of the wood
Always sand solid wooden sheets with a fine grain before you start working with it. Beech does not splinter but pre-drilling is necessary. Beech, like any other solid wood species, can warp in humid conditions and in varying temperatures. Therefore, treat the material with a lacquer or stain as soon as possible so that you can enjoy it for as long as possible.
Specific applications of solid beech timber board
These boards can be used for various carpentry work such as window frames, stairs, furniture, kitchen worktops or tables. Beech is ideal for use in the kitchen because it is a non-toxic wood. Because of this, we often see this sheet as a cutting board, chopping block or kitchen or counter top. The board is not durable and the interior is glued. As a result, this sheet material can only be used indoors.
